TITLE : The Big Rocks in Our Life.

Big rocks represent the foundation of our life conduct, our interactions with others and our attitude to our work. Once we have identified the big rocks that are relevant to us, they form the strong foundation on which our life and work is built. Our educational system currently has no mechanism for helping individuals identify our own big rocks and the important role they play. In this talk, I will share some of the big rocks that have been the foundation of my life and work.

Dr Arun Shanbhag is the Chief Innovation Officer, Manipal Academy of Higher Education and Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the Manipal Institute of Technology, Manipal. Previously he was on the faculty of Orthopaedic Surgery, Harvard Medical School, Boston and Senior Advisor to the Chairman, Orthopaedic Surgery, Mass General Hospital, Harvard Medical School. Dr Shanbhag has an MBA in Executive Management from Boston University, Boston, a PhD and a Master of Science in Bioengineering from Clemson University, Clemson, SC and a BE in Electrical Engineering from the Manipal Institute of Technology, India. He has received numerous international grants including from the National Institutes of Health, leading corporations and private endowments. Dr. Shanbhag is the recipient of many awards and honors, has contributed over seventy full-length research publications in International journals and book chapters, and given over a hundred presentations at international meetings, and invited lectures. He is the recent (July 2018) recipient of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Grand Challenge Explorations Award.
In his various positions, he has developed and implemented strategies for Faculty Development, Online & Philanthropy and led clinically relevant basic science and translational research. Dr. Shanbhag has also served as Principal at the Innovation Support Center, an early technology accelerator and Director of the Orthopedic Biomaterials Laboratory at MGH, Harvard Medical School.
He is a marathon runner having run the Boston, Chicago, United States Marine Corps and the New York City Marathons.
