MANIPAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY (MIT)

The Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT), Manipal was established in 1957 as one of the first self-financing engineering colleges in the country by Dr. T. M. A. Pai. MIT is a constituent unit of the Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE). MAHE is one of India's leading academic and research institutions with active partnership with more than 250+ leading universities around the globe. It has been granted Institution of Eminence status by the Ministry of Education, Government of India in 2020.

About the Organising Departments

Department of Physics

is one of the founder departments of the Institute. Currently the department has grown and developed into a center of PG studies and research with a faculty strength of 22. Faculty are specialized in various fields such as Condensed Matter Physics, Nanomaterials, Thin Film Devices and Theoretical Physics. The total external funds received by the department for various research projects is over INR 60 million. The department offers open elective subjects to B.Tech. and M.Tech. students apart from teaching Engineering Physics. The department also offers M.Sc. (Physics) and Ph.D. programs. Presently about seventy students are pursuing fulltime Ph.D. in the department.

Department of Chemistry

Started in 1957 and is one of the oldest departments of MIT Manipal. Over these years, the department has immensely contributed towards developing sustainable and innovative solutions for challenges in health, medicine, energy, materials science, and the environment by leveraging the broad expertise of esteemed faculties. The department has eminent faculties with expertise in interdisciplinary and application-oriented research in organic, inorganic, physical, and materials chemistry.

The department’s research output is evident in terms of high-impact publications, consultancy services, research grants, and knowledge transfer to industries. Major research areas: Anti-microbial polymers, Liquid crystals. Corrosion and its protection techniques, Solar cells, Organic chemistry (Medicinal chemistry, Drug-delivery for targeted molecules), Supercapacitors, Batteries, Flexible electronics, Electro(photo)catalysis, Fuel cells, Hydrogen production, Electrochemical sensors, and CO2 conversion to value-added chemicals. The department offers Engineering Chemistry course for B. Tech. and M.Sc. programs with Organic/ Applied Chemistry specializations, and Ph.D. in emerging areas of Chemistry.
