About the Conference

Mitochondria, once perceived merely as cellular powerhouses, have emerged as dynamic regulators of cellular homeostasis, metabolic plasticity, and programmed cell fate. Recent breakthroughs have illuminated their indispensable role in bioenergetics, redox balance, calcium signalling, innate immunity, and epigenetic modifications, positioning these organelles at the epicentre of health and disease. The 11th Annual Conference of the Society for Mitochondrial Research and Medicine (SMRM), India, is a collaborative effort of three centres - Society for Mitochondria Research and Medicine (SMRM), India, Manipal School of Life Sciences, MAHE, Manipal and Department of Medical Genetics, KMC, MAHE, Manipal, India. The conference aims to convene leading researchers, clinicians, and industry pioneers to discuss emerging paradigms in mitochondrial biology and ageing. The conference will explore fundamental mechanisms, pathological implications, and therapeutic avenues, fostering interdisciplinary discourse and collaborative advancements.

About Manipal Academy of Higher Education

Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), an Institution of Eminence Deemed to be University, is a self-financing higher educational institution established in 1953. In June 1993, it was declared as a Deemed to be University by the Government of India. Our excellent track record in academics, infrastructure, and research contributions and standing in the national and international rankings, culminated in us being declared as an Institution of Eminence Deemed to be University (IoE) by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, in October 2020. MAHE is synonymous with excellence in higher education and excellence in research. MAHE is home to over 35,000 students from 60+ nations, 3000+ faculty and 10000+ support and service staff, and offers 300+ programmes across various disciplines including Medicine, Engineering & Management, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Management, Life Sciences, Communication, Humanities, Liberal Arts, and Social Sciences, etc. In NIRF ranking 2023, we were ranked the 6th best University, 16th in Overall category, 25th in Research and in top 100 in innovation. We are also ranked in top 250 Universities in Asia in the QS World Rankings, in 251-300 ranking in The Asia University Rankings and the top rank in India as per UI Green Metric World University Ranking.

About Society for Mitochondria Research and Medicine

The Society for Mitochondria Research and Medicine, India (SMRM) is a nonprofit organization of scientists, clinicians and academicians. The purpose of SMRM is to foster research on basic science of mitochondria, mitochondrial pathogenesis, prevention, diagnosis and treatment throughout India and abroad. One sixth of humanity lives in India. India is rich in terms of cultural and genetic diversity, which has been maintained since time immemorial. Indian subcontinent has approximately 5000 anthropologically well-defined endogamous groups.
With a very large population and high birth rate, and consanguineous marriage favored in many communities, there is a high prevalence of genetic disorders in India. Mitochondrial disorders, unlike any other genetic disorders are inherited exclusively maternally and gains more importance in the Indian context. Each disorder produces a wide spectrum of dysfunction that can be extremely perplexing to the scientist and clinician. Current estimates place the incidence of mitochondrial disorder at about 1 in 2000 to 1 in 5000 live births in Western countries. Due to inadequate diagnostic tools, clinical management and rehabilitation facilities, the burden of the genetic disorders, in particular mitochondrial disorders is much greater in Indian subcontinent than in Western countries. SMRM acts as a forum to bring together the patients with mitochondrial disorders who need the care, the clinicians who diagnose and treat mitochondrial disorders and the basic scientists who are working in the field of mitochondrial research and medicine. SMRM was formally inaugurated during the historical Indo-US meeting on "Mitochondrial Research and Medicine" which was held for the first time in India at CCMB from 22nd January to 24th January 2007.
