The SEARCH – The KMC Health Sciences Library at Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), Manipal, is widely regarded as one of India's best Health Sciences libraries. The state-of-the-art library, spanning 1.5 lakh square feet across five levels, is a domain for information seekers, whether students, faculty, or researchers. It can accommodate 1300 students at a time. Besides the comfortable seating and reading environment, the library is well equipped with modern facilities such as access to the internet and web resources, including online journals and e-books. The library is a central library for numerous departments and institutions within MAHE.
Designed with various spaces to meet different needs, the library offers reading areas, group study spaces (for UG, PG, and research), private study rooms, a computer lab, internet kiosks, self-service scanning, a self-check-out/in kiosk, a book drop box, accessible spaces for differently-abled users, a cafeteria, a lounge, and an audio-visual room.
In addition to providing ample seating and a conducive reading environment, the library offers modern facilities, including access to online resources such as e-books and online journals. The library is equipped with a growing collection of online databases accessible on campus and remotely via OpenAthens Single Sign-On (SSO), using Office 365 login credentials (learner.manipal.edu or manipal.edu).
The library's Unified Library Services Solution (Library Web Page) integrates Stacks with a Web-Scale Discovery Service, offering a comprehensive search function across all subscribed and open-access resources. All library collections and services are fully automated using Koha library management software, and users can search for print materials, including books, journals, theses, and WHO publications, through the Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC).
The library ensures a secure and efficient environment with state-of-the-art RFID technology, Wi-Fi, and security systems, including CCTV. It also offers research and project support services, including Turnitin for plagiarism checks, Grammarly for grammar and spelling corrections, AJE for English-language editing, author workshops, literature search services, and access to bibliographic and citation tools such as Scopus and Web of Science.
The library engages in best practices such as organizing information literacy programs, library workshops and conferences, book exhibitions, and celebrating Librarians' Day and National Library Week. Other services include reference services, current awareness, circulation, photocopying, scanning, inter-library loans, access to question papers from previous years, and training in using e-resources.
