Manipal Institute of Virology (MIV), a constituent unit under MAHE, is one of the country’s premier virology laboratories under the private public partnership scheme and one of the few national institutes offering academic programs in Virology. MIV is accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL), signifying quality and competence in medical testing facilities following the standard ISO 15189:2012. It is the only virus diagnostic laboratory in India with more than 40 serological, molecular, and autoimmune tests included in its scope. MIV has a state-of-the-art infectious disease diagnostic facility, a blend of classical and advanced methods, which provides the capability to detect infectious diseases with an average turnaround time (TAT) of 24 hours. MIV is a Centre of Excellence recognized by the Global Virus Network (GVN) and a partner in the WHO Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network (GOARN). Know MoreThe National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune, was established in 1952 as the Virus Research Centre (VRC) under Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and Rockefeller Foundation. In 196 7, the Institute was taken over by ICMR and in 1978, VRC was renamed as NIV. The world's first mosquito cell line, popularly called 'Singh's cell line (C6/36)', developed in 1967, was a remarkable contribution. With an initial focus on arboviruses, the Institute grew into a national hub for virology research and training. High Containment and Maximum Containment Laboratories were established at the Pashan campus, housing State-of-The-Art BSL-3 and 4 laboratories.
The institute possesses State-of-The-Art facilities for virus propagation, virus repository, genomics, high performance computing, animal house, electron microscopy and immunology. The institute serves as the resource centre for virus research and diagnostic laboratories (VRDL) network of Department of Health Research, Government of lndia. Four new zonal NIVs are being established at Bengaluru (South Zone), Jabalpur (Central Zone), Dibrugarh (East Zone), and Jammu (North Zone) for collaborative research and outbreak investigation of viral diseases.
